A Queensland coal mining project required a critical upgrade to its communications infrastructure to support ongoing operational demands. The existing communications tower had reached the end of its service life, and the site’s evolving layout meant that the infrastructure needed to be relocated and modernised — without disrupting day-to-day operations.
One of the key challenges was the site’s geotechnical conditions, which made traditional ground-anchored tower installations impractical. The project required a non-ground penetrating solution that could be deployed quickly, safely, and without compromising structural integrity. Additionally, the communications system itself needed a full refresh — including the relocation of essential equipment such as the communications hut, solar array, battery cabinet, and generator.

The Challenge
The project required a complete overhaul of their existing communications setup, including:
- Decommissioning an ageing lattice mast
- Relocating key infrastructure (comms hut, solar array, battery cabinet, generator)
- Deploying a new 30m guyed mast without ground penetration
- Upgrading end-of-life communications systems

Smart Design & Engineering
Designed a freestanding 30m guyed mast supported by outriggers and ballast blocks — eliminating the need for ground penetration. Engineered to withstand regional wind and load conditions, ensuring long-term reliability.
Seamless Site Works & Relocation
Conducted detailed site inspections to optimise layout and logistics. Safely decommissioned the existing mast and relocated all critical infrastructure with precision. Collaborated with the client’s preferred civil and craneage contractors to streamline construction and installation.
Advanced Communications Upgrade
Replaced legacy systems with a modern UHF TETRA Damm Binary Array and Wave 1 microwave PtP links. Installed an IP-rated Wave 1 backhaul system to futureproof the network. New bulkhead CAT 6 lightning protection. Reused existing CCTV infrastructure where possible — reducing costs without compromising performance.
Project Management & Commissioning
Managed every stage of the project, from lift plans to final commissioning. Delivered full engineering documentation and compliance reporting. Provided ongoing support to ensure smooth handover and operational continuity.
